I'm hoping ya'll can help me figure out something that's been driving me crazy, or tell me I'm overreacting if that's the case....
My step-children are both in middle school (7th and 8th grade) and they are both doing terribly academically. Currently both children have grades hovering around a 2.0 GPA (this is actually UP in the past week) but if you factor out PE, art and computer classes the GPA's get worse. We only discovered their poor academic performance last year (long story and they live on the West Coast) but my husband has made a point of calling the kids at least once a week, talking to them about their school work, and discussing their missed assignments with them and with their mom. NOTHING has changed!!! Their mother has a very casual attitude about it, and has done little to make any progress with them.
In the meantime, I get online everyday to check their grades, and want to pull my hair out because of all of the missing assignments. My husband has asked that the kids be removed from all extra-curricular activities (so they can focus on their studies) but mom refuses. She even went so far as to tell my husband he shouldn't call the kids and focus so much on school!
Basically, I'm about as frustrated as anyone can get. I am extremely worried that if the kids can't get it together academically they are in for a very dim future. While I realize and accept that not every child is an academic, I'm not willing to accept D's and F's, and I know they can do better than C's. When I lived in New Orleans I worked for someone who was very involved in education reform, so I've seen all the dismal statistics on kids who fail academically before they hit high school.
Okay, so anyone have any words of wisdom, suggestions, or any idea why we can't seem to get these kids motivated?
Thanks for "listening."
