EURO now turns our Gulf low Wednesday into a powerful storm, 999MB almost overhead SE LA. This means warmer so no snow but it kicks the pattern and the EURO in 7-10 days shows the Polar Vortex entering the US.

Zack, do you think there is any validity to my previous post?

I love ro read historical weather events in south Louisiana. Although we’ve had numerous sleet and snow events since record keeping, has there ever been a significant ice storm say south of I-10? Northern Louisiana has. I’m talking at least a solid quarter inch of ice and more. You would think so with all of these shallow cold air masses we have dealt with. I can’t imagine the collapse of New Orleans infrastructure wit a half inch of ice. Again, i’m talking mainly or all ice. Anybody?

I’m sure it has happened at some point. Beck in 2013 or 2014 (don’t remember which one) we had a pretty severe ice event in Gonzales. Not sure if it was a quarter inch thick or not but it was very thick on my cars. Ice sickles were a good 7 or 8 inches long hanging from the roof line too and the grass in my yard was completely covered up by ice and sleet.

Not specific to this particular possible airmass Gil. Just from a historical perspective. You would think cold + Gulf + overrunning = major ice at some point in the past or future. New Orleans would be crippled for weeks IMO.

Oh, no doubt. I hate ice storms. Had them in Oklahoma as a teen. I was just noticing that these shots of air don't seem so shallow according to the GFS, which is more indicative of snow.

There was a major ice storm to hit Lafourche Parish, my husband talks about it a lot, he said it was so cold that Bayou Lafourche froze, I’ll ask him the year
