I also saw PLENTY of birds, and they seemed to be behaving normally.

That semi-naked swirl isn't just a mesoscale swirl, it's the dominant LLC it would appear. Tracking it and how it evolves is going to be key, as long as the combination and of shear and dry air being forced into the system from the NE, it will never evolve. For some reason, this just has the beginning look of a bust with how the UL pattern has setup. The anticyclone that was dominant yesterday is no longer protecting this system.

Watch the UL pattern and the LLC's movement. They're both critical to development at this stage.

With an obvious bias, I hope this thing never develops. I don't like the possible rain totals though, wherever it lumbers ashore. Rain was always going to be the biggest threat with this system, and with the high river levels, it's obvious why there's a heightened level of concern.

the west winds in a cyclone are found at the bottom or south part the system, so the LLC is usually found north of the west winds.

I agree with you. These days do we still need an absolute closed low per recon to upgrade?

Yes, otherwise it would be classified as an open wave. There's strong west winds down at 26N, but at the same time there's no corresponding east wind near that coordinate to pinpoint a center that I can see. I guess we'll find out shortly.

Yes, but when I noticed the note about the system moving into an area not favorable to development, I diverted my attention back to the GOM.
