I still have a hard time understanding the NWS % rain concept......but when it comes to dangerous winds it's a tough thing to forecast.

You can never win. Let's say the forecast is for 40-50 mph gusts to 65 mph. That won't verify at every location....and it may verify only for a short period of time. Other spots might see those winds for hours. Because these storms are not solid discs of constant wind we know that the main feeder bands are where the winds are mixing best to the surface. You can be 20 miles from a place that sees hours of high winds while you are seeing much less. It can't possibly be forecast much better in my opinion.

It actually got windier than the last minute forecast for me but I was under that outer feeder for quite a while. Not surprised at all....though I expected more power issues in St Tammany than we had.

You beat me to it. Many people forget how powerful and scary a 50 mph wind gust can be. We haven't had any of those around here in a while. In their minds, they haven't been programmed to what that means. So, in their minds it might have been stronger than forecasted. Zack, you nailed the wind speeds for our area as far as I'm concerned.

One last thing...I'd say most of us don't have a good feel or are not a good judge of wind speed. Can you look up at the top of a swaying 110 foot pine tree and know the wind speed? I'd imagine our guesses would be all over the place. Of course those winds aren't the same as at street level so there is another reason we may not know how to estimate winds well. Now in an open field or on the water obviously you've got a better shot at knowing what that wind at least feels like.

Can't please some people. How do they expect over half a million customers over tens of thousands of square miles to get their power back in a few hours?

I saw about 30 Pike power trucks staged at the Winn Dixie off I-59 this morning. I am always amazed at the network that is in place for disaster response from the nation's power companies
