2014 Saints were supposed to be a whole lot better than they were. But we let go of 2 of the biggest leaders on defense. (Jenkins and Harper). The crapstorm started with jabari greer's career ending injury and we broke records for the number of starters were on IR for the year, early in the season. 2015 Saints were going to suck... we all saw it coming (though I never said it out loud because fans shouldn't), but we knew it. Junior Galette became an instant train-wreck (money goes to your head and there's nothing else in there, SMH). Soooo..... we become a virual expansion team on defense. Breaux, Swann, Anthony, Kikaha, Barnes, Richardson, Edibali, Gwacham, Davidson... There were definately some growing pains, but the fact is, they were ALL having growing pains at the same time. That's the reason, not an excuse. A team considered VERY YOUNG might start 3 or 4 rookies. Rookies surrounded by experienced players. Even if they aren't "good", their growing pains are their own and there's a journeyman lined up next to them to help take some of the heat off of them.
2016 Saints have all those 2nd year guys listed above, 2 medical redshirt draft picks from last year, 3 *star* starters drafted with the first 3 picks (#1 DT, #1 WR, #1 FS, and yes I consider Bell a starter), a 300 lb. project african/canadian Defensive end who's name I can't pronounce (Oneymata), a stud 3 Tech DT (Don't believe the crap-loids Fairley's very solid), an all-pro QB for our defense (Don't believe all the crap-loids, Laurinaitis is what we needed in the middle. He played last season with a full arm cast, couldn't bendn his are what-so-ever and still had 100 tackles), and a old/new Defensive coordinator.
Most importantly on defense, we're at least TWO DEEP at every position with not too much drop off from the starter to the back-up in most of those cases. Yeah, Robertson isn't Ray Lewis, but if Ellerbe goes down (like has been the norm since he got here), Our defense doesn't take much of a step back... that was just one example, There's more depth on defense than I've seen in a long long time. And as for our offense: All weapons are in place again for the first time in a long while. Sean Payton's offense requires 5 receivers (field stretcher, slot guy, possession/redzone guy, Seam stretcher TE, and a RB that catches well out of the backfield and can run screens. In other words (Henderson, Moore, Colston, Graham, Sproles/Thomas) Hmmm... (Cooks, Snead, Thomas, Fleener, Spiller/Cadet)
Again, I'm not saying Superbowl, just respectable again. Finally... Heck, with our 2016 schedule, 8-8 would be respectable, but I think we beat that by a game or two. And THAT's what happened to your Saints, the were rebuilt on the fly!!!
