AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE LAS VEGAS NV
437 AM PST WED DEC 31 2014
.SYNOPSIS...A STRONG AREA OF LOW PRESSURE OVER SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA
WILL TRACK EAST TOWARD ARIZONA TODAY INTO NEW YEAR`S DAY. THIS WILL
RESULT IN PRECIPITATION ACROSS MUCH OF THE MOJAVE DESERT WITH
GREATEST SNOW ACCUMULATIONS IN MOHAVE COUNTY ARIZONA. SNOW LEVEL
WILL BE AS LOW AS 2000 FEET. CONDITIONS SHOULD DRY OUT ACROSS THE
ENTIRE AREA BY THURSDAY EVENING HOWEVER VERY COLD TEMPERATURES WILL
LAST INTO THE WEEKEND.
.SHORT TERM...TODAY THROUGH THURSDAY NIGHT.
UPPER LOW OVER SOUTHEAST CALIFORNIA EARLY THIS MORNING WILL CONTINUE
TO TRACK EAST THROUGH THE DAY AND ACROSS SOUTHERN NEVADA BY MID DAY
AND THEN INTO WESTERN ARIZONA BY THIS EVENING. SNOW HAS BEEN FALLING
SINCE EARLY THIS EVENING IN THE MORONGO BASIN INCLUDING YUCCA VALLEY
AND YUCCA MESA WHERE 2 INCHES OF SNOW WAS REPORTED DURING THE
EVENING. RADAR AND SATELLITE IMAGERY HAS BEEN SHOWING CLOUD
ENHANCEMENT ACROSS SAN BERNARDINO...CLARK AND MOHAVE COUNTIES.
OUTSIDE OF THE MORONGO BASIN AREA SNOW HAS BEEN SLOW TO START MAINLY
BECAUSE IT VERY LOWEST LEVELS ARE EXTREMELY DRY WITH DEWPOINTS IN
THE SINGLE DIGITS. CLOUDS HAVE BEEN LOWERING AT MCCARRAN OVER THE
PAST HOUR WITH CEILINGS FLUCTUATING BETWEEN 5000-6000 FEET. THE 1AM
OBSERVATION FROM HENDERSON DID SHOW LIGHT SNOW FALLING...BUT IT VERY
LIGHT AT THIS TIME. OVER THE NEXT FEW HOURS WE SHOULD START TO
MOISTEN UP TO ENOUGH TO START SEEING MORE WIDESPREAD LIGHT SNOW. ITS
UNLIKELY IT WILL BE HEAVY ENOUGH TO ACCUMULATE MORE THAN A TRACE OR
SO IN THE VALLEY...BUT UP TO AN INCH IS STILL POSSIBLE IN THE HIGHER
FOOTHILLS. I HAVE BEEN WRESTLING WITH PULLING THE ADVISORIES FOR LAS
VEGAS AND MESQUITE...BUT WITH THE CURRENT ENHANCEMENT AND LOWERING
CEILINGS AND THE BEST DYNAMICS FROM THE SYSTEM YET TO COME, I FELT
IT WAS A LITTLE TOO SOON TO CANCEL.
MODELS CONTINUE TO HIT MOHAVE COUNTY PRETTY HARD WITH SNOW AMOUNTS
WITH MOST AREAS ABOVE 3000 FEET SEEING A FEW INCHES OF SNOW WITH
HIGHER AMOUNTS IN THE IN THE MOUNTAINS. BEST WINDOW FOR HEAVIEST
SNOW IN MOHAVE COUNTY LOOKS TO BE MID MORNING THROUGH AFTERNOON.
WILL NOT MAKE ANY CHANGES TO THE CURRENT WINTER STORM WARNING. SNOW
IS EXPECTED TO LIGHTEN UP LATE WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON...BUT AT LEAST
SOME SHOWERS WILL STICK AROUND INTO THURSDAY BEFORE THE SYSTEM EXITS
THE AREA LATE THURSDAY AFTERNOON.
GUSTY WINDS HAVE ALSO BEEN OCCURRING OVER MUCH OF THE AREA. WE HAVE
HAD SOME GUSTS OVER 50 MPH DOWN THE COLORADO RIVER VALLEY
OVERNIGHT...BUT THESE WINDS ARE EXPECTED TO GRADUALLY DIMINISH
THROUGH THE DAY. WINDS TONIGHT WILL BE A CONCERN FOR A LOT OF FOLKS
WHEN IT COMES TO FIREWORK DISPLAYS AND IT LOOKS LIKE MOST WIND
SPEEDS WILL DROP TO 10 MPH OR LESS...BUT THE EXCEPTION MAY BE THE
COLORADO RIVER WHERE WINDS MAY CONTINUE TO GUST TO 20 MPH OR SO.
ANOTHER CONCERN WILL BE FOR TEMPERATURES TONIGHT. IN AREAS BEHIND
THE LOW WITH CLEARING SKIES TEMPERATURES WILL LIKELY DROP RAPIDLY
ESPECIALLY IF WINDS LIGHTEN ENOUGH. A LOT OF AREAS WILL SEE READINGS
VERY CLOSE TO FREEZING AT MIDNIGHT.
