TROPICAL DEPRESSION FLORENCE Discussion Thread

Oh boy. Marine Corp will have their hands full in Camp Lejeune, N.C. Now, looking at its geographical information.

Probably a good idea to keep politics out of this discussion at this point.

I mentioned that earlier. I went through a big storm there so I can imagine the undertaking they have in front of them. The barracks and stuff will be safe from the wind but there's alot of families on base and off. The family housing was wood framed but at least they were raised somewhat. If they get a better idea of landfall they might shuffle people and equipment between the bases scattered through there.

I'm not an alarmist, but this is a unique viewpoint.

Very slight shift northward in track

None of the guidance suggest that Florence has peaked in intensity,
and this is supported by a continuation of a low-shear environment,
and even warmer waters over the next 36 hours. Thus, the intensity
forecast is raised from the previous one, bringing Florence close
to category 5 strength tomorrow. Near landfall, the vertical wind
shear could increase, along with the increasing likelihood of
eyewall cycles. While the intensity forecast shows some weakening
of the maximum winds near landfall, the wind field is expected to
grow with time, which increases the storm surge and inland wind
threats. The bottom line is that there is high confidence that
Florence will be a large and extremely dangerous hurricane,
regardless of its exact intensity.
