This was from the 7pm forecast. The 10pm is out.

Weather channel is saying hurricane force winds for perhaps 24hrs for some areas. TS winds for longer. Could y’all IMAGINE if this thing made landfall as a Cat 4? Holy Crap, this could be horrendous.

I’d rather Cat 4 for 3 hrs than Cat 1 for perhaps 24. Geez.

Indeed. Satellite presentation shows that her SW quadrant is no longer exposed. Full wrap-around of the inner core has occurred. This lady could strengthen pretty quickly as a last gasp.

So I have a good friend who lives within a mile of Hugh MacRae Park in Wilmington. She is staying with her husband and twin 5yos because “the generator is good to go and they don’t have trees around them.”

Thoughts on flooding and storm surge in this area? I told her she was crazy and even offered friends for her to stay with in Ashville.... I am so worried that she isn’t budging.

I think your friend near Hugh McRae park will be fine. There's an online inundation viewer that shows the park dry with a 10' surge at Wilmington. Of course, being in a hurricane still sucks...especially in the summer, with no A/C.

Pressure dropped 2 mbs from recons first pass through the eye to the next. First pass was 957 and they've said it was 955 the second pass.

We had 90mph gust in the Baton Rouge area which tore us up, but I believe that Florence is a bit larger in size than hurricane Gustav.

I think this is one thing I never see discussed when covering weather. The impact of low end hurricanes winds is dictated more by infrastructure and the lay of the land more than the storm itself. 90MPH to an area with underground power lines and small, flexible vegetation is not the same as 90MPH to an area with sprawling old oak trees draping above ground power lines. Gustav was a testament to that.
