Yeah this thread title is catchy and to the point. I wanted to start this because I read a post by Opus questioning if people had sewerage backing up from Gustav and if it was even possible.
Well during Katrina (around the halfway point) I started noticing a bad smell from my bathrooms and no one had been in there using them so I found it odd. Let me preface the rest by stating that I live in Southeast Baton Rouge.
Now the smell started getting stronger and at some point it started coming out from the bottom of the toilet. It apparently pushed the wax seal up as well because the floors started getting a brownish/yellowish water. This was not a very fast process and I tried stopping the water with towels but every 30 second to a minute the sewerage water would bubble up through the pipes stronger than before.
At some point the water started coming up through the bathtubs as well and it was identical to the brownish/yellowish sewerage water.
All in all this ruined my floors, the bottom part of my walls, and several pieces of furniture. Now Opus I'm not sure why you doubt that this is possible. My story is first hand information. It's real and not imaginary. My plumbing is not subpar. The parish had a plumber check the pipes and then installed a pump which keeps the sewerage from backing up into my house. The problem is not with the plumbing of the house but rather the parishes sewer system. My neighborhood in particular has several houses that have had the same problems and the parish says it stems from the parishes sewer system and the taxing of that system because of new construction.
Since the pump was installed I have not had any problems except when I lose power and the pump cannot run. Anyway this is the story and it is very real. Not sure why the good Doc doubts that it's possible unless he wants to discount a licensed plumber, my story, and several of my neighbors who had the same thing happen.
