Today is June 1st......First day of what many are saying will be an active hurricane season.
And June 1st is the day I annually renew my financial support of gulfcoastwx.com.
If you are reading this, you undoubtedly came here for weather info. Did you know over the years that information provided by the members of this forum have helped hundreds of people save time, energy, and potentially heart break??
The pro and amateur mets on these boards provide detailed info about hurricanes in many cases long before such info is provided publicly by news media. While officially I listen to parish officials on when to evacuate, I KNOW WELL IN ADVANCE that such an order is likely to be called by reading these boards. So time after time, I have already had hotels booked when the order was given. So I have saved myself and my family time and frustration.
I have been following the mets on these boards since 2005 and Hurricane Katrina. Many know my story but for those who do not:
My step-mother had a heart attack the Tuesday before Katrina. The next day while visiting her all day, I made hotel reservations on the computer in her hospital room. She died that night. When we met with funeral home officials Thursday afternoon on when to do her service, I pushed for Saturday rather than Monday because of what I read on these boards. Now mind you, Katrina was still on the other side of Florida at this time. My cousins were also at the funeral home planning their dad (my uncle's funeral). They opted to do the service on Monday. Long story short: while at my stepmother's funeral, I got the notice that St. Charles Parish called for a mandatory evacuation Saturday morning. We were able to leave a few hours later. My uncle's funeral was postponed and my cousins had the horror of knowing their dad's body was in storage during and for weeks after the storm.
Over the years, I have come to rely on these folks and they have become my "family" and "security blanket" to hold onto during tropical events. I honestly do not know what I would do without them during hurricane season.
This is why I am a PROUD GULFCOASTWX SUPPORTER! And I hope you will join me and support these folks, too!
