Below is a copy of the current Pontchartrain Astronomy Society President Message. The club has three events in July, the monthly meeting with Alexandra Cranford as the guest speaker, an outreach event in Gretna and the northshore meeting in Slidell. A link to the calendar with maps can be found below.

I would like to thank Jason Talley for his presentation about the moon illusion last month in Covington. The data presented about the new theory involving a blend of science and psychology was very interesting. Our minds and how we perceive the world around us is a fascinating topic.
Ron Marcella, Tim Mann, and I participated in the NASA Climate Day on June 22 at the St. Charles Parish Library. About 100 kids and adults looked through the 3 telescopes we had set up for solar viewing before the rain cut the day short. Families were also treated to a planetarium show and several craft and online activities in the library. Although it was very hot outside (before the rain), it was very rewarding hearing the "oohs" and "ahs" of the kids looking at the sun for the very first time. Thanks to Jason for inviting the PAS to participate in this fun event. I encourage all members to get involved at one of the various outreach opportunities during the year.
I am pleased to announce that Ron Marcella is hosting an in-town star party at The City of Gretna Observatory on Friday, July 12th. If you need an address for GPS purposes, use 910 Gretna Blvd., Gretna, LA which is the address of the Gretna School (the observatory is right around the corner). Plan to arrive around 7 pm if you are setting up a telescope, and any time after that if you plan just a visit. He will have snacks and drinks available for attendees. You may contact Ron with any questions. I hope to see many of you there!
I am still planning to coordinate an observing night at SPMOS before the summer is over. I was also approached at our last meeting about possibly scheduling a road trip to Hunstville, AL to visit NASA's Marshall Space Center. I have a grandmother that lives not far from there so I visit that area about twice a year. If enough members are interested in making this trip perhaps we can try to schedule something before the end of the year. If you are interested, please let me know.
Our next meeting will be held on July 19 at 7:30 pm in the UNO Science Building. Our speaker will be WWL channel 4 meteorologist Alexandra Cranford. Her topic will be meteorology knowledge for observers. You won't want to miss this special presentation.
Remember to check our website forum or the club Facebook page for information
concerning outreach events and other club activities. I hope to see you in Gretna on the 12th and at our next meeting on the 19th.
Keep looking up,
Heather LeBlanc
