METEOROLOGIST-IN-CHARGE NWS NEW ORLEANS BATON ROUGE
SUBJECT: CHANGES IN FLOOD CRITERIA FOR WESTERN ATCHAFALAYA
RIVER BASIN EFFECTIVE OCTOBER 10, 2013
THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE (NWS) WEATHER FORECAST OFFICE (WFO) IN
NEW ORLEANS/BATON ROUGE, LOUISIANA, AND THE LOWER MISSISSIPPI
RIVER FORECAST CENTER (LMRFC), BOTH LOCATED IN SLIDELL, LOUISIANA,
HAVE CHANGED THE RIVER FLOOD CRITERIA FOR SEVERAL LOCATIONS IN THE
WESTERN ATCHAFALAYA RIVER BASIN. THE LMRFC CREATES RIVER STAGE
FORECASTS FOR OVER 200 LOCATIONS THROUGHOUT ITS SERVICE AREA. THE
FORECASTS ARE THEN FORWARDED TO WFOS SUCH AS NEW ORLEANS/BATON
ROUGE FOR DISSEMINATION TO THE PUBLIC.
THE NEW FLOOD CATEGORIES HAVE BEEN ESTABLISHED WITHIN THE WESTERN
ATCHAFALAYA RIVER BASIN AT THE FOLLOWING LOCATIONS: BUTTE LA ROSE
BLRL1; MELVILLE MLVL1; KROTZ SPRINGS KRZL1; AND MORGAN CITY MCGL1.
THESE NEW CRITERIA WILL BECOME EFFECTIVE SEPTEMBER 30, 2013.
AT BUTTE LA ROSE, THE NEW LEVELS ARE 17 FEET ACTION STAGE; 20 FEET
MINOR FLOOD STAGE; 25 FEET MODERATE FLOOD STAGE; AND 28 FEET FOR
MAJOR FLOOD STAGE.
AT MELVILLE, THE NEW LEVELS ARE 33 FEET ACTION STAGE; 34 FEET MINOR
FLOOD STAGE; 45 FEET MODERATE FLOOD STAGE; AND 50 FEET FOR MAJOR
FLOOD STAGE.
AT KROTZ SPRINGS, THE NEW LEVELS ARE 28 FEET ACTION STAGE; 29 FEET
MINOR FLOOD STAGE; 40 FEET MODERATE FLOOD STAGE; AND 43 FEET FOR
MAJOR FLOOD STAGE.
AT MORGAN CITY, THE NEW LEVELS ARE 4 FEET ACTION STAGE; 6 FEET MINOR
FLOOD STAGE; 7 FEET MODERATE FLOOD STAGE; AND 12 FEET FOR MAJOR FLOOD
STAGE.
THE CHANGES IN THE FLOOD CRITERIA WILL ALLOW EMERGENCY MANAGERS IN
AVOYELLES, ST. MARY, ST. MARTIN, ST. LANDRY, AND IBERIA PARISHES
TO BETTER SERVE THE COMMUNITIES THAT WOULD BE IMPACTED BY
FLOODING. THESE FLOOD CRITERIA REFLECT INPUT FROM THE LEADERS OF
THESE PARISHES, ALONG WITH FIRST RESPONDERS, AND CITIZENS.
RIVER FORECASTS PROVIDE FIVE DAYS OF PROJECTED STAGES AT EACH
LOCATION. IN ADDITION, WFO NEW ORLEANS/BATON ROUGE PROVIDES OTHER
FORECASTS AND WARNINGS SERVICES FOR SOUTHEASTERN LOUISIANA AND
SOUTHERN MISSISSIPPI, INCLUDING PRODUCTS THAT DETAIL DAILY WEATHER
DEVELOPMENTS AND MARINE WEATHER CONDITIONS, ALONG WITH PRODUCTS
THAT SUPPORT FIRE WEATHER ACTIVITIES AND AVIATION ACTIVITIES. THE
WFO ALSO PROVIDES SUPPORT AND INFORMATION DURING TROPICAL WEATHER
EVENTS THAT THREATEN THE GULF COAST.
THE LMRFC PREPARES RIVER STAGE FORECASTS FOR THE MAJOR RIVERS IN THE
SOUTH-CENTRAL PART OF THE UNITED STATES. COVERING APPROXIMATELY
200,000 SQUARE MILES, THE FORECAST CENTER?S AREA OF RESPONSIBILITY
INCLUDES THE LOWER MISSISSIPPI RIVER BASIN, THE ATCHAFALAYA RIVER
BASIN, AND THE PEARL RIVER BASIN.
