EVENTS TO OCCUR IN 2013 IN THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE NEW
ORLEANS/BATON ROUGE SERVICE AREA. THE SERVICE AREA INCLUDES ALL
LOUISIANA PARISHES EAST OF THE ATCHAFALAYA RIVER...THE
SOUTHERNMOST COUNTIES OF MISSISSIPPI FROM WILKINSON TO
WALTHALL...AND THE COASTAL COUNTIES INCLUDING PEARL RIVER COUNTY.
JANUARY...THE SECOND WETTEST ON RECORD AT BATON ROUGE WITH A
MONTHLY TOTAL OF 14.67 INCHES. 7.96 INCHES OF THAT FELL BETWEEN
THE 7TH AND THE 10TH. ON THE 10TH...AN EF-1 TORNADO STUCK NEAR
PLAQUEMINES IN IBERVILLE PARISH CAUSING SOME ROOF DAMAGE IN AN
INDUSTRIAL PARK. ON THE 13TH...AN EF-0 TORNADO TOUCHED DOWN IN
ZACHARY AND AN EF-1 TORNADO MOVED NEAR POPLARVILLE MS.
FEBRUARY...THE CITY OF NEW ORLEANS HOSTED THE NFL SUPER BOWL WHICH
SAW BEAUTIFUL SUNNY AND COOL CONDITIONS FOR GAME DAY.
HOWEVER...OVER A STRETCH FROM THE 22ND THROUGH THE 25TH...SEVERAL
ROUNDS OF SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS PRODUCED LARGE HAIL AND DAMAGING
WINDS THROUGHOUT THE SERVICE AREA. MOST NOTABLE WAS BASEBALL SIZED
HAIL OCCURRING IN MARRERO ON THE 24TH. STRAIGHT-LINE WINDS CLOSE TO
100 MPH ON THE WEST BANK...AN EF-1 TORNADO IN HOUMA ON THE 25TH
ALONG WITH LARGE HAIL ACROSS MUCH OF METRO NEW ORLEANS.
MARCH...THE 4TH DRIEST MARCH ON RECORD AT NEW ORLEANS
INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT WITH ONLY 1.08 INCHES MEASURED. THIS ALSO
RANKED 9TH DRIEST FOR THE GREATER NEW ORLEANS AREA ON RECORD. ON
THE 18TH...LARGE HAIL BETWEEN 1 AND 2 INCH DIAMETERS FELL ACROSS
SOUTHWEST MS. ON THE 31ST...LARGE HAIL AND DAMAGING WINDS IMPACTED
THE BATON ROUGE AREA...ACROSS THE NORTH SHORE PARISHES AND INTO

APRIL...THE 5TH WETTEST APRIL WITH 11.62 INCHES AT NEW ORLEANS
INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT. THE 11TH SAW AN EF-1 TORNADO MOVE ACROSS
AIRPORT DRIVE IN SLIDELL WITH SEVERAL HOMES DAMAGED NEAR THE NWS
OFFICE. ON THE 24TH...A COUPLE OF TORNADOES MOVED THROUGH HEAVILY
POPULATED UPPER JEFFERSON PARISH...AN EF-1 IN KENNER AND AN EF-0
TORNADO IN METAIRIE. WIDESPREAD WIND DAMAGE ALSO OCCURRED ACROSS
METRO NEW ORLEANS.
MAY...ENDED UP THE 10TH WETTEST ON RECORD AT NEW ORLEANS
INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT WITH 8.23 INCHES. MEANWHILE...BATON ROUGE
HAD ITS 8TH COLDEST MAY WITH AN AVERAGE TEMPERATURE OF 72.4F.
THIS WOULD ALSO AID IN SETTING THE 4TH COLDEST SPRING SEASON FOR
BATON ROUGE WITH AN AVERAGE TEMPERATURE OF 65.0F FOR MARCH-APRIL-
MAY. ON THE 22ND...80 MPH WIND GUSTS WERE REPORTED FROM A
DOWN BURST IN ASSUMPTION PARISH.
JUNE...SEVERAL REPORTS OF LARGE HAIL AND STRAIGHT-LINE WIND DAMAGE
WAS RECEIVED IN THE SLIDELL AREA AND THE RIVER PARISHES. ON THE
19TH...A STRONG WATERSPOUT MOVED ASHORE ONTO GRAND ISLE...CAUSING
TORNADO DAMAGE TO A FEW CAMPS.
JULY...SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS WERE REPORTED IN THE BATON ROUGE AREA
ON THE 14TH WHEN TREES WERE DOWNED AND HOMES WERE DAMAGED DUE TO
STRONG WINDS. ON THE 22ND...65 TO 70 MPH WINDS PRODUCED STORM
DAMAGE IN PORTIONS OF PIKE COUNTY.
AUGUST...AN OVERALL QUIET WEATHER MONTH. A RECORD HIGH OF 97F WAS
MEASURED AT NEW ORLEANS INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT ON THE 7TH. THIS WAS
ALSO THE WARMEST DAY OF THE YEAR FOR NEW ORLEANS.
SEPTEMBER...THE 4TH WARMEST SEPTEMBER IN NEW ORLEANS WITH AN
AVERAGE TEMPERATURE OF 81.7F. ON THE 3RD...HAIL FELL FOR 7 MINUTES
IN NEW ROADS LA.
OCTOBER...WAS A QUIET MONTH BUT DID HAVE THE CLOSEST TROPICAL
CYCLONE THREAT WHEN TROPICAL STORM KAREN FORMED NEAR THE YUCATAN
PENINSULA ON THE 3RD BUT FIZZLED PRIOR TO REACHING THE LOUISIANA
COAST BY THE 6TH. THIS WAS ONE OF SIX TROPICAL SYSTEMS IN THE GULF
WHERE FIVE OF THEM STRUCK MEXICO. ONLY TROPICAL STORM ANDREA MADE
LANDFALL ON U.S. SHORES IN THE FLORIDA BIG BEND AREA BACK IN EARLY
JUNE.
NOVEMBER...A RATHER UNEVENTFUL MONTH UNTIL THANKSGIVING DAY. AN
EARLY ARCTIC COLD FRONT MOVED THROUGH THE AREA...BRINGING A HARD
FREEZE TO SOUTH MISSISSIPPI. THANKSGIVING MORNING SAW LOW
TEMPERATURES OF 26F AT BATON ROUGE...25F AT MCCOMB AND 27F AT
PASCAGOULA. ON THE NEXT MORNING NEW ORLEANS REPORTED 32F.
DECEMBER...A DAILY RECORD HIGH OF 82F WAS REPORTED AT NEW ORLEANS
INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT ON THE 6TH. AUDUBON PARK ALSO BROKE A RECORD
WITH 83F ON THE 6TH. THIS WAS FOLLOWED BY ABOUT TWO WEEKS OF
COOLER THAN NORMAL CONDITIONS. TEMPERATURES REACHED 80F ON THE
20TH AND 21ST AND VERY WINDY CONDITIONS IMPACTED THE REGION ON THE
