THE WEEK OF FEBRUARY 3 THROUGH FEBRUARY 7 IS SEVERE WEATHER
PREPAREDNESS WEEK IN MISSISSIPPI. LATE WINTER AND SPRING MONTHS
TYPICALLY BRING THE HIGHEST FREQUENCY OF SEVERE WEATHER TO THE GULF
COAST REGION. SEVERE WEATHER PREPAREDNESS WEEK IS A GOOD TIME TO
REVIEW SEVERE WEATHER SAFETY PLANS AND INSURE YOU HAVE A MEANS TO
RECEIVE TIMELY WARNINGS.
LAST YEAR...2013...HAD RELATIVELY FEW SEVERE WEATHER EVENTS THAN
NORMALLY OCCURS EACH YEAR. ONLY ONE TORNADO TOUCHED DOWN IN THE 8
COUNTIES IN EXTREME SOUTHWEST AND COASTAL MISSISSIPPI. BY
CONTRAST...TWELVE TORNADOES TOUCHED DOWN IN THOSE SAME COUNTIES
DURING 2012. THE LONE TORNADO THAT OCCURRED DURING 2013 TOUCHED DOWN
IN PEARL RIVER COUNTY EAST OF POPLARVILLE ON JANUARY 13...2013. THE
WEAK TORNADO DOWNED SEVERAL TREES AND CAUSED MINOR PROPERTY DAMAGE.
THERE WERE SEVERAL SEVERE WEATHER EVENTS DURING THE SPRING MONTHS
WITH ISOLATED REPORTS OF DAMAGING WIND GUSTS AND LARGE HAIL. WIND
DAMAGE WAS PRIMARILY CONFINED TO DOWNED TREE LIMBS OR SMALL TREES.
ON WEDNESDAY MORNING...FEBRUARY 5...THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE
INVITES LOCAL GOVERNMENT AGENCIES...SCHOOLS AND OTHER ORGANIZATIONS
TO TEST THEIR SEVERE WEATHER PLANS BY PARTICIPATING IN A TORNADO
TEST DRILL. THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE WILL ISSUE A TEST TORNADO
WARNING MESSAGE ON NOAA WEATHER RADIO SHORTLY AFTER 900AM. THE TEST
MESSAGE WILL PROVIDE INTERESTED GROUPS A WAY TO TO MAKE SURE THEIR
NOAA WEATHER RADIO IS OPERATING CORRECTLY AND REVIEW THEIR SEVERE
WEATHER PLANS.
EXPERIENCE HAS SHOW THAT LIVES CAN BE SAVED IF PEOPLE ARE AWARE OF
THE DANGERS ASSOCIATED WITH TORNADOES AND SEVERE WEATHER...AND ARE
PREPARED TO TAKE QUICK STEPS TO PROTECT THEMSELVES FROM SEVERE
