Firefighters tackle blaze at Sixfields Tavern in Northampton
Fire crews are expected to be at the scene of a major fire at Sixfields Tavern until midnight tonight.
The fire broke out on Saturday afternoon and a spokesman for Northamptonshire Fire and Rescue Service said six pumps were in attendance trying to bring the blaze under control.
At 4.45pm a spokesperson for the fire service said fire crews were containing the blaze to stop it spreading further.
A large part of the roof of the building had collapsed but there were areas of the building that had not been damaged by fire and they were working to stop the fire spreading to that area.
It is understood that one person had been treated by ambulance crews for smoke inhalation as a result of the fire but there were no further details available.
The fire service said they will probably start to scale down the operation shortly to three pumps and two aerial appliances.
Fire crews will be at the scene until at least midnight. The spokesperson said it was too early to determine the cause of the blaze. The high winds this afternoon would have made the fire spread more quickly.
A Hungry Horse spokesperson told the Chron: “Unfortunately, there has been a major fire at the Sixfields Tavern.
“Thankfully, all of the pub’s customers and team members were swiftly evacuated and no-one was hurt. The pub will not be open for the foreseeable future and we will be working with the emergency services to establish the cause.”
A reader’s picture sent to the Chron’s Facebook page appears to show that the fire started in an area outside the building before spreading to the pub itself.
Police officers were directing Northampton Town fans away from Sixfields Stadium after their win over Northwich in the FA Cup.
The pub was recently refurbished in October and re-opened on October 16. According to the pub’s Facebook page, it was fully booked for Christmas Day with only limited availability for Christmas parties.
