Hurricane Irma
Post Storm Report #1
First & foremost we express our sincere support to our sister cities of Naples & Marco Island. It has been devastating to watch the storm surge damage in their communities. We realize but for a few degrees of direction there would be Sanibel.
Highest recorded wind speed on Sanibel during Hurricane Irma was 57 miles per hour
Initial reports are there are trees down on some roadways
The next 6 to 8 hours will be critical as we continue to monitor for possible storm surge on the Island. Low tide tonight is at 10:16 pm & 3:34 am is the high tide of 3.02 feet. We are continuing to monitor the surge through the high-tide
Initial reports are of most of the Island being without electrical power at this time, we are coordinating restoration with LCEC our electrical power provider.
At this time all potable water on the Island is under a "boil water alert" if the water is going to be utilized for human consumption. At this time there is no water pressure on the Island. Further reports will be forthcoming as this issue is addressed
Sanibel City Hall will be closed for regular business on Monday, September 11th & Tuesday, September 12th . Police, Public Works, and IT report as directed by supervisors
No 9-1-1 calls were received from Sanibel during the Hurricane
Lee County and Florida Department of Transportation will begin inspecting the Sanibel Causeway very early tomorrow as required after significant wave action
DUE TO THE LOW WINDS, ONCE THE COUNTY GIVES THE "ALL CLEAR" & IT IS SAFE FOR PERSONS TO LEAVE THEIR SHELTER NO RE-ENTRY PASS WILL BE REQUIRED. DO BE PREPARED FOR CONDITIONS WITH NO WATER OR ELECTRICITY.
Upon return to the Island motorists need to drive with extreme caution & watch for downed power lines
COUNTY- WIDE CURFEW OF 8 PM TO 7 AM, DAILY, REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL RESCINDED.
Be Smart...Be Safe!
