More Iceland The famous basaltic crystals at Reynisfjara Beach...south coast. This place is in quite a few movies and TV series including Game of Thrones and The Secret Life of Walter Mitty (the remake).
Some Icelandic horses. These horses were brought over from western Europe about 900-1000 years ago by the Vikings. They have a unique gate called a tolt that only Icelandic horses do...... probably because of their particular body proportions. They look a bit like english shire horses but quite a bit shorter...short and stocky for the cold and snow. No horses are allowed to be brought to Iceland and if an Icelandic horse leaves the island it cannot return (disease control). These don't have crazy manes but google them and you'll see some very Fabian ones!
Here is one near a small fishing village NW of Reykjavik in the town of Akranes.
A shot from the house I rented....
A friend and I hiking Sólheimajökull Glacier. I was the only one that drank the melt water...don't know why..it's probably the freshest, cleanest water I'll ever drink in my life.
These are all great photos. I'd like to get up to Iceland someday.
Truly another world. Youngest largish landmass on earth (18 million years or so I believe). 1.3% forested.... And that is almost completely planted. It takes about 1000 years for the fresh lava flows to break down to support moss.....
It's expensive... But if you want to car sleep it's possible.. but the cars cost a bunch too.
Unbelievable scenery everywhere..... Great (expensive) food. Nice nice people who all speak English... Perhaps the safest country in the world... PS country's population is about that of New Orleans proper.
Waterfalls out the wazoo... Big ass waterfalls. You can drink the water away from the coast almost anywhere (though some of the water might be sulfated which would be obvious) out in the winds as it's all been well fingered by the lava and they don't have animals to spoil it away from the people and horses.
