So I bought a battery powered mower today. EGO 56V 500Ah. Not self-propelled. I don't have a huge yard and I don't have St Augustine grass (like much of the south shore), so pushing isn't that difficult.
First impression......I did a little bit of cutting in the wet grass. No issue. Love the easy single lever height adjustment (spring assisted). From 1-1/2" to 4" which is more than my gas mower range and more than 4 times faster to change it. For storage it stands up on its nose with the handle folded.
The battery and charger (came with...be aware not all manufacturers include battery and charger). 56 Volt, 500Ah. The fast charger charges the battery in 40 minutes....for 45 minutes of easy mowing down to 20 minutes for tough mowing (definition notwithstanding).
It has a cooling fan on the charger, so might want to charge in another room....I did it not 5 feet from me while watching TV and it's not a biggie.
I was sooooo tired of handling gasoline for my edger and mower....you have to drive to get it...sometimes getting a bit of fuel on your hands.....put it in your car (some fumes linger), deal with adding to mower...storage and freshness issues with overwintering. Air filter, fuel filter, spark plug, fuel lines, control cable, etc etc....all maintenance/trouble points for gas mowers.
I'm not bushhogging a field, I'm cutting my damn lawn. Plenty of power for that.
So I'm happy. I can store this in my house as long as I clean off the cuttings and wheels....which is easy and no gas residue and fumes to worry about.
Oh...and it has LED headlights for nighttime cutting (since it's pretty quiet)
So no more excuses for not having a nice yard. I will be cutting much more often with this....easily. It will be easy to keep ahead of the weeds putting out seed stalks by doing so.
My only remaining yard issue is chamberbitter (phyllanthus urinaria, see photo). This damn weed has spores all along the leaves and takes up a ton of soil if you pull them. Hoping by bagging I can catch most of them from reseeding in the lawn.
My front lawn is centipede...though it has a lot of other green things growing in it. What's left of my backyard I am trying a Zenith Zoysia variety...the only one available by seed. I did one 20'×30' area this spring and it is almost completely covered now. It is supposed to crowd out weeds more vigorously than centipede....we'll see. My backyard was bare (no sod) before I seeded.
So there's that.....
