Go. Even if the school has power, students and their families may be dealing with their own damage and power outages, and getting to school may be way down their list of priorities. I would hope your job wouldn't fault you for getting out of the way of potential harm just in case they might be open after a hurricane. Go, and travel safely.

And all y'all who have family or friends refusing to leave, bless y'all for trying to persuade them to get out. You can't make them go.

This storm terrifies me, and it isn't even coming here.

Well tell him being elevated at 40ft above MSL winds will be a lot more impactful. The wind impact goes up dramatically with elevation. Hope his house is roof fortified.

If there is any sort of modeling that isn't bad news...the HAFS are insistent for a few runs down it is going to rapidly weaken closer to landfall. Although it is hard to get any sort of positivity out of the current unfolding situation. It may not make much of a difference avoiding another big surge situation as the wind field will be expanding with the forecasted weakening prior to landfall.

For reference, Katrina's lowest pressure was 902 and 175mph.

Radius of hurricane force winds with Milton is 30 miles or so. Katrina was 105 miles at the peak. All indications this will stay fairly compact til maybe 18 hours before landfall and then it really starts expanding...unless we see an ERC unexpectedly sooner.
