This fool is something else. Read this ridiculous article that ESPN actually allowed to go public. I hope this guy doesn't have any kids because if he does, I'm sure they get beat up in school.
Also, read my response to the article. I emailed it directly to Tim Keown.
National championship game? Not this year
by Tim Keown
Consider this a call to arms. Not arms, really -- violence is not the answer, of course. This thing is not a big thing, like calling for a general strike for impoverished, abused workers in a Third World country. Really, this probably wouldn't be the place to dispense that kind of information most efficiently anyway. So maybe you should consider this a small cry for a tiny shard of truth, which is a thing nonetheless.
You can't deny that.
Since there is no national championship game in college football this year, let's just stop calling it that.
Now, wasn't that easy?
Congratulations, guys ... due to contractual obligations you might be national champions.
You didn't have to stop eating something you like, or walk to work, or feel guilty about who made your shirt.
This could be huge. It could spread virally, from common folk like us to the nation's sports editors and broadcasters. Let's give it a shot.
Here's a little story that kind of relates:
One time in the mid-'80s, a friend of mine was walking to class at UC Davis when he came across the usual cacophony of campus protests. One of them had something to do with Archbishop Desmond Tutu and apartheid, another was Campus Crusade for Christ, and a third was a shaggy group of guys walking in circles and chanting something my friend couldn't understand.
As he got closer, he figured it out: They were all yelling, "Dump The DH! Dump The DH!" It was a sophomoric backlash to all the consciousness-raising of the moment, so my friend got in line and started chanting.
This protest is kind of like that one.
There will be a game in January in New Orleans between Ohio State and LSU, and the winner will have no greater claim to the national championship than three or four other teams that finish their season with wins in January.
There is no national championship game. They're going to call it that, for contractual reasons, but that doesn't mean we have to follow along blindly.
This national championship is as mythical as every one before the BCS was invented by that drunk guy in his garage. LSU-Ohio State will not tell you the best team in college football any more than Georgia-Hawaii or Virginia Tech-Kansas or West Virginia-Oklahoma.
If you keep calling it what they want you to call it, they win. So call it something else, like the Mythical Bowl brought to you by That Drunk Guy in his Garage, or something like that.
So stand up for what's right. Speak the truth.
Oh, and the next time someone trots out an anti-playoff argument that includes any reference to the number of games or academics, tell them this:
The Pennsylvania state high school football championships will conclude this weekend. The teams will be playing their 16th game.
My Response:
Regarding...."National championship game? Not this year"
LOL...what the hell? Have you even watched any college football games this season? For once, the BCS FINALLY WORKED. It has found the 2 best teams in the country. Any other contenders would be absolutely ridiculous.
Virginia Tech maybe? Yeah...got pounded by LSU and lost to an un-ranked B.C. team. OK. Beamer Ball is just not what it used to be.
Oklahoma maybe? Yeah...lost to an unranked Texas Tech team and a very poor Colorado team. Sure they beat the once #1 team in the country, but was Mizzou really all that in the first place? Anyone should've seen that loss coming for Mizzou. Oklahoma does not deserve to be considered just because they're "Oklahoma".
Georgia maybe? Sure...ok...lost to both Tennessee and South Carolina, two teams that LSU beat. Plus they couldn't even contend for their conference championship. Stop the crying Mark R. It's really embarrassing to Bulldog fans.
Missouri maybe? Uhh...no explanation necessary. It took care of itself.
USC maybe? LOL...sure the media loves USC. That's never going to change, but when you get beat by Stanford on your own home turf, that says it all. Even if USC would've won by 1 point, it would have made all the difference in the world. I won't even throw in the loss to Oregon. Some may say "yeah, but that wasn't really USC...they had a lot of players out". What to do when this happens? Answer: look at LSU.
Kansas maybe? Yeah...the entire nation saw that one coming. Finally Kansas got slapped back down to reality when they played their toughest opponent in Mizzou who couldn't handle the Sooners...twice.
West Virgina? Nope...sorry, not with losses to South Florida (who was riding on cloud 9 for a few weeks until the college football world caught up to them), and losing to Pitt??? LOL...at home??? W.V. NEEDED to win that game! You cannot lose to a game like that, at home, at the end of the season, and be considered to play for a National Title. Now, if that loss would've come up in the beginning of the season, W.V. may have a valid argument. However, for now, the Mountaineers will just have to celebrate taking down the media loved Sooners.
Hawaii....finally, the Hawaiian Hype. With magical close wins against teams such as Louisiana Tech, Nevada, and Washington, and giving up over 30 points to teams such as Utah State and San Jose State, there's NO WAY IN HELL this team should even be considered to CONTEND for a National Title. Georgia will pound a whole new volcano into the Warriors. Hawaii is about to see what college football is really like. I do hope their fans make the trip to the Sugar though. New Orleans needs the tourist dollars and Hawaiians are great to party with.
So now, back to Ohio State and LSU. Ok, LSU has 2 losses, however, it took 3 overtimes in each one of those games to lose. That says a LOT. This LSU team has not been the same since they pounded Virginia Tech by 41 points. They've been playing with 2nd and 3rd stringers all season long and were still be able to win the SEC. That's pretty darn impressive. By the way, expect that LSU team to be back on 1/7 at full force.
Ohio State...sure their schedule was pretty darn mediocre, however, they did win the Big 10 and are playing darn good football. They deserve it. Illinois caught them by surprise with the spread offense. The spread is very hard offense to contain, and Illinois executed it perfectly...well, at least good enough to win. If OSU and Illy would match up again, OSU would win. OSU would win 8 out of 10.
Both LSU and Ohio State bounced consistently back and forth around #1 and #2 all season long. There's a reason behind that...they're the 2 best teams in the Nation.
That being said, yes there will be a Championship Game on January 7, 2008, and yes it will be for the National Title. I'm sorry to burst your bubble buddy, but your argument has absolutely no validation what so ever. It's really time you stop watching re-runs of General Hospital and catch up with what's going on in the world of college football.
While reading your article, I literally laughed the entire time. If you meant it to be humorous, you succeeded, however, if you were serious in your analogy, well, I guess there's just no hope because any respect you may have had previous to this publication has pretty much disappeared in your faint and fuzzy view of sports.
