Tulane University Closing at 12 noon tomorrow....
Dear Tulane Community, While Tropical Storm Gustav appears to be tracking to the west of New Orleans at this time, Gustav’s path is still too unpredictable for us to be sure of its ultimate landfall. After many discussions with our senior leadership team, as well as up-to-the minute reports from our national weather monitoring service, we have decided to close the university at noon tomorrow (Friday, August 29). Based on what we know today, the university will resume normal business operations on Wednesday, September 3, while classes will resume on Thursday, September 4. If circumstances change, updated information will be posted on emergency.tulane.edu and on the Tulane Alert Line at 1-877-862-8080 or 504-862-8080. You will also receive a text message. At this time, I want you to be ready to enact your personal emergency preparedness plans and continue to monitor emergency.tulane.edu and the Tulane Alert Line for the latest news on university operations. Campus residence halls will be closed at noon, Saturday, August 30; therefore, students who need transportation from New Orleans, will be taken by bus to the campus of Jackson State University, where they will be sheltered until their return to Tulane. The busses will leave at 9 a.m. Saturday from the Reily Center. Students who are flying out of New Orleans will be able to take a campus shuttle to the airport. The shuttle will pick up in front of Irby and begin service at 3 p.m. today and run until 1 a.m. and then from 6 a.m. to 1 a.m. on Friday and Saturday. The schedule is online at tulane.edu/publicsafety/index.cfm Those faculty and staff who have been designated as essential personnel for their departments must check in with their supervisors immediately and should not leave campus until they are instructed to do so. Prior to their departure from campus, all faculty and staff are responsible for securing their offices and work areas, and executing their departmental hurricane plans. Again, check with your supervisor if you are unclear about your duties and responsibilities. Be safe, and as I said in my message to you today, based on my experience we will be fine no matter what path Gustav takes. President Scott Cowen |
