I know the weather service won't say this but I'm having a hard time getting the fact that we could be dealing with an Allison type event with it coming in and barely moving dumping 40 inches of rain in some areas like it did in Texas out of my head. So many variables to consider with a slow mover, extended power outages, loss of drinking water for a prolonged time, extra stress on trees and buildings.
Does anyone know what the storm surge for the lake is forecast to be? I live on the lake right by the rigolets bridge and am trying to decide when to leave. Thanks so much for all your information.

I believe they estimate 8 - 10' for that area.

You on the island? After seeing what Katrina did out there I sure wouldn't stay for anything. That being said my father and mother in law looking like they're riding it out in Venetian Isles.
Anyone outside of the protection levees riding this out is rolling the dice IMO. Once this starts you're stuck out there with no one to help you if you need it.

If the NOLA metro area gets a 20" rainfall, then that is a rough equivalent of the rain we got during the infamous "May 8th" Flood. It would likely follow that if your home flooded back then, you should probably raise your furniture, etc. to avoid damage. I'm thinking that if you did not flood then, you'll likely stay dry with this impending event forecast. Comments?

Does anyone else feel that Channel 4 is starting to downplay the storm...well Eric anyway? I understand that they are trying to not cause panic but I find he's kind of like "whew" that was close when in all actuality it's not over! There's still time for intensification.

The problem with those newscasts is that New Orleans has not truly experienced sustained hurricane conditions since Betsy. Yes, Gustav had some nice gusts and Katrina had gusts in the 90's I believe....but gusts.
Lots of people will be surprised just how strong sustained winds in the 90's with gusts to 115mph are.
