thermalwind, that's some gorgeous country! Our trip to the Smokies this summer made me realize I couldn't live in the mountains (too much anxiety up and down the steep, winding mountain roads), but I can sure appreciate their beauty.
I absolutely love it.
You remind me of a woman I met at the Twin Lakes Visitors Center, whos family took her over Independence Pass when I70 was closed. Its paved but so narrow in two spots there isnt a middle line and youre on the side of a mountain. Then when you get to my side, theres no guardrails so they can plow it.
She was shaking thirty minutes after.
Going to get out and do some extreme leaf peeping before the rain tomorrow.
Those types of roads were my dad's preference when we used to go out west for family vacations (including Independence Pass). Thankfully it was always in the summer, so we didn't really have to worry about snow on the road, although there was still plenty on the ground at the higher elevations. We're actually going to the Smokies ourselves here in a couple of weeks, hopefully it's not too early to see some color.

Spent the weekend driving a 26-foot Uhaul to Colorado......ans just from one afternoon and night there (flew back this afternoon) my body has lost all of its moisture. The single thing I have an issue with going to the Rockies.
Once aspen color on the front range mountains now..shouldnstart seeing snow soon at elevation

I could live in The Smokies, but not on The Smokies!

Good heavens, I would have been passed out. There were guardrails in the Smokies (although not on the roads up to our cabin), and it was still about enough to do me in! I had no idea I had such anxiety over heights until we were there.
